This is one of the largest horse mounted pilgrimage processions in Europe and dates back to 1412.
On Whit Monday a procession of more than 900 festively decorated horses and their traditional costumed riders, travel through the blooming Zeller valley to Steinbühl. The procession is led by the cross bearer, followed by lantern bearers, fanfare musicians, a priest, his sextons and servers. Riding behind them is the "Whit groom" with his two best men.The previous year's "Whit groom and his supporters follow at the back of the official procession. Behind them the rest of the riders follow. Blessings are held along the route, with a church service at St. Nikolaus, the Whit riders' pilgrimage church in Steinbühl. The procession then returns to Bad Kötzting. Later in the afternoon the symbolic Whit wedding takes place in the town. The Whit Monday ride is accompanied by a week of events, from a horse market to beer tents, funfair and music concerts. |
