Important points about car hire - Taking a hire vehicle into the Czech republic - Some car hire companies will not allow you to take their cars across the border into the Czech Republic. If you intend to visit places over the border, check before you hire a car that you may take it into the Czech Republic.
Avis, Alamo/National do not allow any of their cars to be taken into the Czech Republic. Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Sixt do allow you to take some of their vehicles over the border. It's advisable to ask for written confirmation that you can take the vehicles over the border. Cars hired at Prague airport can be driven into Germany and returned to the Czech Republic without restriction.
- Travelling to us by train and want to hire a car for a couple of days? Please let us know. - We can arrange car hire with a local firm and their vehicles can normally be taken over the border.
- Coming in winter - We would recommend that you insist that your hire vehicle is fitted with winter tyres. These are essential if you arrive when it’s snowing. Between snowfalls, German roads are generally kept very clear of snow, this is not necessarily the same on the Czech side of the border. The roads though the Sumava, beyond Zelena Ruda, in the Czech Republic are not cleared as well, as this side of the border. Other crossing points in the area are often a better choice in winter and we are happy to advise. Re-check when you collect your car that winter tyres are fitted. German law, states that the driver is responsible for making sure that the car is fit for the weather conditions. Accidents whilst driving on summer tyres in snow could invalidate insurance and mean the driver being held personally responsible for all the damage arising from it.
- Travelling with children under 12 or under 1.5 meters tall - They must have a child seat or booster cushion. Check when you book that your car hire company can provide these.
